Skills and Experience

People who hold public appointments come from all backgrounds with different careers and interests. The skills and experience needed will vary from post to post but, in general, you will need to show:

  • commitment to devote the time to prepare and take part in the work of the body 
  • strong endorsement of corporate behaviour and responsibility 
  • excellent interpersonal, team-working and influencing skills 
  • strategic thinking to assess a situation quickly, accurately and even-handedly

Regulation by the Commissioner for Public Appointments

A number of the Public Appointments fall under the remit of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The Commissioner's aim is to ensure that public appointments within his remit are made on merit after a fair, open and transparent process. More information about the role of the Commissioner and his Code of Practice is available from the website of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
